Otakon Denies Request for Fansubbing Panel [END]
2007/06/25
Please see our newer press release for an exciting update!
Otakon, a large north-eastern US anime convention (www.otakon.com) has decided to deny a Dattebayo-sponsored request for a community-oriented fansubbing panel at their July 2007 convention, which will take place in Baltimore, Maryland.
The panel, which was proposed by two members of Dattebayo's staff who are also active members in the wider community, would have focused on fansubbing techniques though each part of the fansubbing process, and would have provided the opportunity for open discussion about all aspects of fansubbing. The panel also invited members from other groups to participate including the staff of Live-Evil and Shinsen-Subs.
According to a statement by Meredith Davey, the 2007 Head of Panels at Otakon, " Unfortunately, due to schedule restraints, I was unable to approve your fansubbing and scanlation panel. I know that fansubbing and scanlation is very popular with many congoers, and to be frank we didn't have an adequate space on the schedule for you."
The panel had been conducted at Otakon for several years prior, since at least 2003, and had contained a representative from DB for the past two years. A discussion that occurred during that panel in 2004 led to DB subbing Bleach. In 2006, approximately 100 people attended the 2-hour panel.
If you are a person who is attending Otakon this year, or a person who attended the panels in the past and enjoyed them, I encourage you to e-mail your member number and a description of why you think a panel like this would be interesting to (otakon e-mail address). Do not spam them, or send e-mails to them if you are not going to Otakon or not someone who has attended Otakon in the past
Even though it is probably too late to change the situation now, let them know how many people enjoy fansubs and would like to learn a little more about them, and feel free to write us in feedback too. It's quite possible that Ms. Davey was correct to deny the panel because she didn't think many people would be interested, so we'd like your feedback.
Thanks for your time.
